Yoga & Self-Massage for Computer Users
with Debbie Daly

I began having pain in my upper back and wrists as a Computer Science major in college in the early nineties.  Years later I was forced to leave my computer job because of repetitive strain injuries.  I became a yoga teacher, and in 2003 started a yoga studio.  Being a business owner required me to carefully return to computer work, and I've succeeded in creating a tech-savvy yoga studio despite my past injuries.

Repetitive strain hit me when I was young.  As a result, I've been learning about it for 15 years.  In my late twenties, my pain led me to mainstream doctors, physical therapists, and massage therapists.  I've received multiple diagnoses: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, and DeQuervain's Syndrome.  I've received cortisone injections, worn wrist braces, and been through the demeaning world of workers' compensation.  In the end, when everything failed, surgery was the only option offered to me.  I chose to change careers instead, and take matters into my own hands.

Since then, I've been lucky to find the tools I need to take care of my own health while returning to computer work.  I now teach workshops and maintain a resource website, www.ComputerYoga.com, to share these tools with my students and the public about self-healing approaches to repetitive strain injuries.

Workshops & Classes for Computer Users

I am now teaching public workshops and private classes geared toward relieving computer-related tension and pain through yoga.

Anyone who uses a computer more than two hours a day can develop repetitive strain injuries, including carpal tunnel syndrome, “mouse shoulder,” and upper back and neck problems.  The body tells us when it's overworked at the computer by creating tension and pain in the neck, upper back, hands or shoulders.

These sessions teach computer workers how to keep repetitive strain injuries at bay with a regular yoga practice, increased body awareness, and self-applied trigger point massage.  Common approaches such as ergonomics and frequent breaks are also covered.  Those who already have repetitive strain injuries will learn about therapies to prevent further damage, and to reverse existing damage.

Participants will learn about the parts of the body that are most often damaged by modern computer use.   The customized yoga session that we practice will help your body prepare for and recover from a long stretch at the computer.  The practice will be available in take-home materials, along with a resource list of books, DVDs, and online resources.

Workshops apply to all levels of ability; no yoga experience is required.  For more information or to schedule a session, call me at 415-663-4018 or email debbie@debbiedaly.com.
